5 Basic SEO Mistakes that you need to Avoid

Search Engine Optimization is both an art and a science which helps you rank your website on top of your competition, but it's easier said than done. According to website owners, SEO is a process that needs to be implemented after the website is live, but actually it's the other way around, search engine optimizer should be involved right from the start of the project. There are many small & basic SEO mistakes that happen every day on millions of websites, avoiding which can really help them rank or at least get indexed in major search engines.














































































1. Copied Content

General conception to build the website quickly is to copy the content from the first website showing up in search engines and fit it all in the new design. Apart from the design and look & feel of the website, content is the most important part for any website. First of all, it's not ethical to steal someone else's content and put it wherever you want, and secondly it's not search engine friendly either. With the latest Farmer's Algorithm change from Google, the low quality and copied content websites have actually been punished and have lost rankings and traffic. You should always have unique, fresh and latest content on your website which will help your users make decisions and help search engines rank you better. After all content is king!



2. Robots.txt



This is very common issue especially for websites getting redesigned. When the website is on testing server, all the search engine crawlers are blocked by robots.txt, but when the new site goes live, the same robots.txt file makes its way to live server. After few days, the traffic starts going down, because search engines starts following the instructions from robotox.txt. Developers should be careful not to upload testing server robots file on live server. It may happen the other way round, when developing a new website on testing server, if robots.txt doesn't block the crawling of the website; your testing website gets indexed in search engines creating duplicate content issue. Also, the world gets to know what you are up to!



3. "Click Here", "Read More" and "Home" Links



This is the most common problems of all mentioned here. Especially these kind of words are used on website homepage to take users to inner pages. Actually these words don't make any sense to search engines and they don't know what to expect on the new page. Instead you should give link like "Read More About Our Team" or "Details about Product" etc. Most of the websites have their homepage linked with keyword "Home" in the menu and in the footer. Instead you should be using your primary keyword that you want to target and rank for.



4. Duplicate or no meta tags



It so happens that developers and designers are so obsessed with the functionality, website design, browser compatibility and other technical issues, that no one cares about title and meta tags of the pages. You may have come across many pages with blank or "Untitled" titles. Many of the CMS (Content Management System) based websites have the same title of homepage carried forward to all the pages. All the pages must have relevant title, meta description and meta keywords tag implemented which must include relevant keyword phrases.



5. Analytics Tracking



Many of the websites don't implement any kind of tracking mechanism to track visitors and traffic on their website. It is understood that when the website is new, you can't expect much traffic, but the shift from no traffic to little traffic and little to increased traffic is very important to track. If you do some offline promotion, you can also see the traffic and analyse how effective it was. So, the analytics tracking should be implemented from the start.
